What does ground handling consist of?

Aircraft ground handling is a set of essential services at airports for the handling of aircraft while they are on the ground. These services are provided by specialised companies and cover a variety of tasks. They include the loading and unloading of baggage, cargo and mail, as well as ramp services such as stair placement, towing and aircraft positioning, water supply and waste disposal.

Technical assistance is also provided, which may involve minor maintenance and checks required prior to take-off. Fuel and oil supply is another crucial task to ensure that the aircraft is ready for its next flight. On the passenger side, these services include check-in, lounge and gate management, as well as assistance to persons with reduced mobility.
